Christmas and a Happy New Year

What a year we have had!

Bus trips, lunches, picnics, social days out and all the wonderful things that make Dapto Seniors the fun club it  is. We look forward to seeing you all next year on the 14th January 2016 when we can start to do it all again.

Bus Trips

Our last trip for 2015 was a cruise on Port Hacking. After a worrying start when the council supplied us with the wrong bus it all turned out very well and members had a lovely day exploring the river aboard a fantastic old ferry Tom Thumb III, it was a day spent in glorious sunshine.

Afterwards the group retired to Cronulla RSL for lunch, a chat and the chance to admire the views of Cronulla Beach and the Pacific Ocean.

The bus trips are held every month and visit a wide variety of places of interest. This year members went on visits to Wivenhoe House, the Careflight Helicopter base, the fascinating Egyptian Room, the Norman Lindsay Gallery and many more terrific places. The cost is usually $12 plus the cost of entry if any (and usually we get a group discount) so these trips are within anyone’s means, where ever possible we get a guided tour of the establishment we visit. As well as being interesting the trip is a social occasion with stops for morning tea and a lunch so there is plenty of time to sit and chat with your fellow members.

Our thanks to all the volunteer drivers who make the day so enjoyable.

Concerts

The Concert Group performed three concerts during the year. All of them were well received; the Christmas concert provided an exciting seasonal finale to the year.

There was some wonderful singing by the choir interspersed with comedy and solo acts of an amazingly high standard. The audience cheered and cheered and when it was their turn to join in with the singalong they did so with great enthusiasm. The light snack afterwards and the many door prizes made the event one to remember and ensured everyone present looked forward to the next.

The group is always on the look out for new talent so you are most welcome to join, fun is always high on the agenda - don’t be shy, come along and take part; rehearsals are every Monday afternoon (once the club’s year starts).

Activities

Apart from these activities Dapto Seniors has something going on every day of the week, Whether it is carpet bowls, cards, exercises, computer tuition, theatre visits or craft there is something that will suit you (click on the CLUB ACTIVITIES tab at the top of the page to find out more). We also take part in various publicity events arranged by local community groups and/or  Wollongong Council.

CPSA Annual Conference 2015

Four Dapto delegates attended the CPSA Annual Conference in Sydney on the 27th and 28th October. It was interesting to see the work that goes on behind the scenes.
2015-10-28 11.11.37
A couple of the guest speakers were outstanding, in particular Kate Swaffer gave a fascinating insight into living with dementia. Kate has early onset dementia and she told of the daily difficulties she faced with good humour and much insight. She has a web site which you can see >>>by clicking here<<< We hope to invite her as a speaker next year subject to arranging a suitable date.

Another speaker that impressed the conference with her knowledge and enthusiasm for her subject was Dr Cathy Sherry, Senior Lecturer in Law at the Uni of NSW. She talked about the proposed NSW strata title laws and their effect on unit owners particularly the elderly.

News from the Front

Arising from the last meeting

Thanks to all the enthusiastic members who have nominated for a position on the 2015/2016 committee. It is great to see so many names put forward. Don’t forget our AGM is scheduled to take place during the 16th July meeting.

Just a reminder that the existing committee has been in place since our last AGM held on 16th January 2014. In 2013 we decided to change the club’s financial year which had previously run from January to December so that it will now run from July to June. The main reason for this  was to make life much easier for our hard working Treasurer who, under the old system, had to prepare two financial statements each year. We retain our membership year as the calendar year, again because this makes our Treasurer and Membership Coordinator's job much easier by separating the two events.

This change necessitated that for one time only the committee served for a period of 18 months under our Constitution rule 11.13.14:

Ashampoo_Snap_2015.06.18_20h51m11s_001_

From July 2015 our elections will be back to 12 monthly intervals and we anticipate the annual AGM to be held in late July or early August – it might vary slightly from year to year depending on how the June/July meeting dates fall.

Department of Fair Trading

At our meeting on the 18th June we listened to a talk given by Lauren and Stacy from the Wollongong branch of the NSW Department of Fair Trading. They warned us about some of the scams which members might be subject to by door knockers, telephone, letter or email. One site they mentioned in particular was the Government Scam Watch initiative. The web site itself is listed in our ‘Seniors Links’ to the right of this article and clicking on the link will take you to their web site which contains information about the latest scams.

Another tip they gave us was to register our phone and mobile number on the Federal Government’s ‘Do Not Call’ register. We have added this address to our list of useful links  so you can investigate this yourself.

The club has for some time kept copies of ACCC’s The Little Black Book of Scams; if you would like a copy ask our club secretary or you can be sent a free copy from the Scam Watch web site itself. A little booklet well worth reading.

The most important thing to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, keeping yourself safe is largely a matter of common sense.

Birthday Lunch

At the next meeting on 2nd July Jackie will be selling tickets to our Birthday Lunch to be held at Dapto Leagues Club on Thursday 23rd July. Tickets are only $18 for members for a delicious meal with good company. Don’t forget to write your name on the back of the ticket so you are included in the draw for dozens of terrific prizes after the meal. It will be fun.

BTW don’t forget to change the date of the Fathers’ Day Lunch on your membership card from the 3rd September to the 17th September. Unfortunately the Sinclair Room has been booked by another club for our original date. We are sorry about this but it is just one of those things that happens.

CPSA Annual Conference

As mentioned during correspondence at this week’s meeting notification has arrived that the CPSA Annual Conference for 2015 will be held in Sydney on the 27th and 28th October. Over the coming meetings we will need to select delegates and discuss or propose any policy or constitutional motions to present at the conference. Don’t miss any club meetings your input is essential.

The NBN Is Here!

As most of you will be aware Dapto has been lucky enough to be one of the few places to receive the previous Labor Government’s promised “Fibre to the Home” broadband service. Most houses are now being fitted with the NBN boxes even if the resident is only having a telephone service.

Several people have asked “What is the minimum equipment needed for me to connect to the NBN/Internet?” Well, this is all you need:

150429 004 Network Cable

Yep! That is all that is required to connect one computer to the NBN. It’s a Cat 5(or 6) network cable which you can buy from any computer or electronics store (or, for a fraction of the price, from China on Ebay). They come in various lengths but it has to run from your NBN box on the wall to your computer or laptop.

Some initial setting up has to be done on your computer using information supplied by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) but it is only done once.  The club’s Broadband for Seniors Kiosk can help you with how you do that.

If you don’t have a computer pester your kids and/or grandkids for one of their old laptops - as long as it has a network socket then it will do the job –check with them that it has a Vista, Windows 7 or 8 operating system (Windows XP or earlier is no longer safe for use on the Internet).  If you have a desktop computer then it depends on it's age whether it has the necessary network connection, most bought in the last few years will be suitably equipped.

Using the NBN is much cheaper and faster than using the mobile phone network via one of those dongles though, of course, it does lack mobility.

Have Fun…

Sixty members attended the event at Integral Energy Park where they enjoyed plenty of cake, a chicken lunch and even ice cream while Maureen entertained the group with her fascinating quiz.

After the meal most of those present moved outdoors to take part in the light hearted competition of Bocce and throwing the Rolling Pin. A few chose to stay indoors chatting to their friends - all our events are very social.

When it was time to go home no-one wanted to move after having so much fun, never mind hopefully we will all be there to enjoy it again next year.

At the club meeting held today, 12th February 2015, long time club member and local identity, Mr Fred Moore, presented the club with a book containing 180 newsletters published by the club between 1987 and 1995. The newsletters detail the events and people that were an integral part of this club up to 30 years ago.

The gift was proudly accepted by the club’s President, Mr Brian Green, and will become a permanent part of the club’s fascinating library of memorabilia from its illustrious past.

The First Bus Trip of 2015

The club’s first monthly bus trip for 2015 took place on the 2nd of February. To start the year off on a high note the bus visited the fascinating Norman Lindsay Museum and Gallery at Faulconbridge in the Blue Mountains.

150202 027 Norman Lindsay Museum and Gallery

The bus, with 20 members on board, left our Dapto headquarters at 8.15am for a visit to this old sandstone cottage once lived in by the artist and his muse, his wife, Rose from 1912 until his death in 1969. Here he produced many of his most famous works including the book “The Magic Pudding”.

150202 001 Norman Lindsay Museum and Gallery

On arrival the group was given a brief talk by one of the staff about Lindsay, his work and the history of the house and grounds.

150202 006 Norman Lindsay Museum and Gallery

Afterwards everyone was free to explore and enjoy the permanent exhibition of his work as well as the painting and etching studios. How interesting it all was.

150202 011 Norman Lindsay Museum and Gallery

Once the group had seen all there was to see the bus drove down the mountain to Penrith Panthers Leagues Club for lunch and a chance to chat about the day’s events. It was a most satisfactory start to the year’s program of trips. It was a visit enjoyed by all who took part.

The next bus trip is a Mystery Tour on the 2nd March. Make sure you get your ticket for the next trip in plenty of time, tickets will be on sale at the next meeting for a mere $12 for the day’s outing. We are limited to 20 seats so it is a question of first in, best dressed.

Next Meeting–29th January 2015

Doesn’t time fly? already it is time for the second meeting of 2015!

The Branch Annual General Meeting

A question was raised at the last meeting asking, “When is the club’s AGM?”

As you are probably aware last year we changed the club’s financial year from the calendar year to the financial year as allowed in the constitution - rule 11.13.14.

CPSA Constitution 11 13 14 rule

This change was purely to assist our hard working Treasurer so he didn’t have to produce two financial statements each year. The only other effect it has is to delay the AGM (rule 11.8.2).

CPSA Constitution 11 8 2 rule

This change doesn’t affect the membership year which remains as the calendar year nor does it affect the hall and room bookings which again remain tied to the calendar year. We anticipate the AGM and election of office bearers will be held during the last meeting in July but this will be subject the club’s accounts being audited so bear with us on this it is a new experience for all of us. Once we have this year under our belt the following years should be easier.

I hope this clears things up.

A Reminder

All Memberships are due! It is still only $12 for the year but please bring the exact money.

Our show ticket organiser would like the $60 for those going to Les Miserable.

See you at the meeting!

Monday, 12 January 2015

Next Meeting - 15th January 2015

The meeting starts promptly at 10.30 am

Don't forget to come early.

This is the first meeting of 2015 and all annual membership fees are due but the good news is that annual fees are still only $12. Please make our hard working treasurer’s life a little easier by bringing the correct money in an envelope. If you want an application form one can be downloaded by >>Clicking Here<< . This form is designed to be printed on a DL envelope (110mm by 220mm).

The morning will have all the usual features:

  • Buy your raffle tickets to win one of either $20 or two $10 prizes.
  • Book a computer lesson
  • Get your name down for one of the hit shows booking this year.
  • Enjoy a tea/coffee and biscuits.
  • Have a look for a bargain on the trade table.
  • Pick up a copy of The Senior Newspaper and/or The Voice when they are available.
  • Find out about our many activities that you can join in, there is something on everyday of the week.

During the meeting there will be the usual short reports about the various activities the club offers its members and you are able to bring up matters of interest to members during General Business - don't be afraid to speak up if there is something that concerns you, this is YOUR club.

The meeting usually finishes between 11 and 11.30am.

Some Reminders:

As was originally discussed late in 2013 and confirmed last year our financial year has been changed to coincide with the Head Office financial year so we will not be having an AGM in January. The AGM will be held in late July or early August (possibly 30th July but the actual date will be given in plenty of time before the event).

The club’s Birthday Book was getting a bit tatty so a new one has been produced - please write your name clearly in the appropriate date if you would like your birthday or anniversary mentioned at the meeting just before the event.

New members are most welcome to come along and find out about the club, there is a short newsletter available for new or potential members at the raffle/signing in table which details coming events and contact details for the various group leaders. Please take one.
